CHAPTER 8
November
Arlo
After passing a busy morning collecting tributes from a band of smelly hobgoblins, Arlo spent some time carefully airing out the tokens in the sunshine. He definitely didnât want the rotting banana scent anywhere near his den. He arranged the bits and bobs in a neat line and wondered what to do next.
Heâd just decided to gather some fresh pine needles for his floor when a familiar voice rang like silver bells on the breeze.
âArlo?â Toby stood on the other side of the bridge, hands in his pockets.
A wave of excitement coursed through Arloâs veins at seeing Toby again finally, but the joy faded away quickly. Things werenât resolved between them. He forced a smile on his face for his friend. For that was what Toby was, and Arlo would do anything to make things right again.
âToby,â Arlo breathed the name like a wish. âIâm glad youâre here.â
âReally?â Toby stared down at his feet. âBecause Iâve been rather rude. Iâm sorry I havenât been by sooner.â
âThatâs all right.â Arlo crossed the bridge and approached. âIâm sorry I upset you.â
âYou didnât upset me.â Toby glanced up. âWell, I was upset, but it wasnât your fault.â
Arlo didnât understand. Heâd been certain his words had hurt Toby somehow. He didnât know what to say.
Toby held out his hand. A folded square of fabric lay in his palm. âI brought you something.â
Another tribute should have perked Arlo up, but it didnât. âYou shouldnât have.â
âBut I wanted to see you, and I didnât have any other ideas. So I thought you might like this.â
Arlo took the gift and unfolded it to reveal a simple landscape scene: rolling green hills leading to a copse of evergreens, white puffy clouds dotting the sky. A brown border painted to look like a window frame surrounded the tableau.
âSince your den doesnât have any windows,â Toby explained.
âWhat a clever idea.â Arlo had always found Tobyâs tributes to be more thoughtful than the rest. âDid you paint it yourself?â
âI painted it, yes, but Arthur did the drawing for me first. The scene wouldn't be nearly as precise without his help.â
âThank you. I will be the only troll with his own window.â Arlo carefully folded the cloth back in place and tucked it inside his coat pocket. âAnd please pass my thanks along to Arthur as well.â
âI will.â Tobyâs voice came soft and shy.
For the first time ever, the silence between them felt awkward instead of comfortable. Neither the riverâs rippling babble nor the birdsâ chirping songs could fill the rift.
Arlo could only think of one thing that might help. âWould you like to join me for tea?â
Toby let out a sigh. âYes, that would be nice.â
They headed beneath the bridge and into the cozy den. Arlo put the kettle on and gestured for Toby to take the only chair. Arlo sat on his bed.
At the same time, they said, âHow have you been?â
Arlo chuckled. âYou first.â
âOh, Iâve been keeping busy helping around the village. I often look after the children and help with the cooking.
